September Meeting – Annual Fall Welcome Meeting, Market Day and Luncheon

 

Please remember your place setting and a dish to pass.  Visitors will be our guests for lunch.

 

The September meeting is a time to welcome those who are visiting to learn about spinning and our guild, to reconnect with each other after the summer months, and to share stories of summer projects and adventures.   Be sure to bring your Show and Tell items!   We’ll have our fall Market Day, so bring what you might like to sell or barter.   And of course we’ll enjoy a free spin.

 

We’ll keep our business meeting short, but there are a couple of things we want to talk about.  When the Guild was formed, one of the main focuses was to provide education for our members and the community.  Over the years, we seem to have become a more social group.  What do we want to be in the future?   

 

There has been discussion about changing our meeting location to somewhere without stairs, and to also change the meeting day to the fourth Saturday for all meetings instead of just in September and October.  

 

We’ll also get an update on plans for our Rhinebeck bus trip.

 

A Note for the November Felting Workshop

 

One of the tools you’ll need for the felting workshop is something to wrap the wool and fabric around to aid in the felting process.  What really works well are the foam “noodles” flotation toys used in swimming pools, etc.  Now is the time to pick them up at end-of-season prices!! 

 

We should also talk about whether or not there will be a fiber fee for the workshop. 

 

Other Important Stuff

 

Guild dues should be paid no later than the November meeting, and will be accepted in September, October and November.  The dues are $20 for the year.  Please make checks payable to Linda Miller.

 

There will be a sign-up sheet for hostess and cookies for each month.  The hostess is responsible to bring coffee creamer for the meeting, and to help with set-up and take-down.  There are usually two people who volunteer to bring cookies or other snacks for the meeting.

 

We have again been invited to provide a Guild display at the Betts Branch Library in Syracuse.   If we agree to do it, we need to decide who will be responsible for collecting items for display, and setting it up and taking it down.

 

I wanted to remind you about the guild blog and email address.  The blog website is http://goldenfleecespinners@typepad.com; email address is goldenfleecespinners@gmail.com.  Gail Roemer will continue to monitor the site.

 

We’ll be gearing up for the 2013 Fiber Frolic.  Activities will probably start in October or November – we have to wait for Beaver Lake to confirm a 2013 date, which they do about six months prior to the event.

The June picnic is upon us already! After a quick change up for meeting in May which ended up at Beaver Lake, we get to again enjoy the outdoors in June. Michelle and her husband have generously offered their lovely home, gardens, pool and yard on the river for our picnic. They have Kayaks and a canoe for use as well. Bring your lawn chair, and your bathing suit if you want to swim. Also, car pooling would be a good idea if possible. If its raining, go to the church. I’ll send an email if there seems to be a question, and if you don’t have email and aren’t sure, you can call my cell phone. Keep your fingers crossed for a beautiful sun filled day !

At the May meeting we welcomed two new members.

Sign ups for the bus trip to Rhinebeck are ongoing - please tell all your friends. At last count, there was still a lot of empty seats ! ! !  Non-member price is $60, which includes tickets to the festival. The trip is scheduled for Saturday, October 20, 2012. The bus will leave from the Grace Episcopal Church parking lot at 5:30 am sharp, and will then pick up additional passengers at the Wegmans lot on Route 5/Genesee St. in Dewitt. The Dewitt folks should be there at 5:30 am also – the bus will load quickly and will not wait for late arrivals. When making your reservation, be sure to indicate where you want to board the bus. The bus will make one 15 minute stop on the way to the Festival, and should arrive at the Festival about 10:00. There will be an opportunity to leave your morning purchases at the bus early afternoon. A time will be confirmed that day. You’ll be given name tags for your bags – please bring large garbage bags to consolidate all your little bags. The bus will leave the fairgrounds at 5:00 pm sharp, and will make a 15 minute stop on the way home, arriving at the Wegmans lot about 9:30 pm to discharge passengers and proceed to the Grace Episcopal lot. We’re looking at August some time for the mud cloth workshop with Lorraine. You should be collecting different dirts for this project from different locations. The wider the variety of types of mud, the more shades of resulting designs. Try riverbed, creekbed, clay, rich black garden, etc, if you know a potter, maybe you can secure some good mud. For this we’ll need a location with water.

Greater Syracuse Knit & Crochet Collective, (created by Terese Bishop and Kathy Miles) meets the third thursday of every month at St. Joseph's the Worker Church, 1001 Tulip Street, Liverpool.

Dates of upcoming meetings are 6/21, 7/19 and 8/16. Doors open at 6:30 pm, meeting begins at 7:00 pm. You're invited to help form a new knitting/crochet guild.

At this month’s meeting we will be SPINNING PAPER ! ! !   We will have some various papers to try but you might want to bring some paper -- those that work well are thinner.  Dress pattern paper seems to work the best for me (thin, tanish), also tissue paper (lots of colors and animal prints available these days), crepe paper; foil tissue paper, and any other type of paper you might want to try spinning.   Some work better than others, but you can try anything !  Also bring something to ply with your spun paper -- novelty yarns, ribbon yarns, your own hand spun fiber singles, strips of thin, flimsy soft fabrics also work.   Please bring scissors.   If you want to do some cutting beforehand, cut strips as long a length as possible at about 3/8 to 1/2 inch width.
